Location Description
The Stirling Mansion and Carriage House sits on a vast 5-acre landscaped estate. It was built between 1890 and 1892, and is a three-story, 24-room, 15,550 square feet Châteauesque style dwelling, designed by noted Philadelphia architect Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr. (1845-1928) and built for industrialist James Hervey Sternbergh, a pioneer in the manufacturing of nuts and bolts in America. Sternbergh built this home for his second wife, Mary Candace Dodds, following the death of his first wife at their Overlook Mansion.
The home is constructed of squared granite ashlar and features a number of eclectic decorative elements including tall chimneys with decorated caps, a balustraded verandah, steeply pitched gable roofs, and roof dormer. The Mansion holds nine suites on the 2nd and 3rd floors which are all restored with their period Victorian style, selected original furnishings, and retain hand painted ceilings. The men's pool room features an 1865 Brunswick birds eye maple pool table. The Carriage House features six suites with a more modern style and industrial design. The mansion remained the private residence of the Sternberghs for over one hundred years.
