Location Detail
Location Name
Mouns Jones House
Location Description
Also known as the Old Swede's House, Mouns Jones, the son of Swedish immigrants, built the two and a half story, three bay, stone dwelling in 1716. It measures 24 ft by 30 ft and features a brick chimney for a large, nine foot kitchen fireplace. It is the oldest surviving house in Berks County and one of the few remaining examples of a Swedish settler's dwelling. The house was built on a two acre site near the Schuylkill River where the primary form of transportation to Philadelphia was by canoe. Mouns Jones was a known confidant with the local Native American peoples. His home was the site of an Indian encampment of the Indians of the Five Nations (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes) in 1712.
