Location Detail
Location Name
Bellman's Union Church
Location Description
Bellman's Union Church is a merger of two church congregations; Lutheran and United Church of Christ, dating back to 1746. The log cabin they shared and used for separate services no longer stands, but an outline of the foundation is still found on premises.
The second (still standing) Bellman's Union Church was built in 1815, the building holds approximately 350 people and while it has not been updated for electricity and plumbing, the Georgian-style church features many styles and motifs not normally found in 19th century rural churches. The church embellishes many of the fine points of architecture such as an elaborate cornice, Palladian windows, arched windows, detailed doorways and a gallery. Particular focal points are the wineglass pulpit and a hand-pump organ. The building is used several times per year during warmer months, for Sunday services, weddings, and annual "Hymn Sings" and a service in the Pennsylvania German dialect.
The third Bellman's Union Church, built primarily of brick in 1924, rests on the other side of a large graveyard and within site of the second church.
A gated and stone walled graveyard from the late 1700's - 1800's sits directly behind the second church and a larger cemetery from the mid 1800's to present day, lays between the second and third church buildings.
Current Use
Second Church is used sporadically in summer months. Third Church used daily.
