Wernersville State Hospital
Location Description
Founded in 1891, and originally known as the State Asylum for the Chronic Insane. Rankin and Kellogg of Philadelphia designed the hospital buildings, and the overall appearance of the main Administration/residential buildings which were modeled after Independence Hall. The facility plan was considered advanced for the times, as there were no walls surrounding the grounds nor were there bars on the windows and doors.
Current Use
Active psychiatric facility. Older buildings are vacant.
